A clear notice

Send a copyright concern through Contact, beginning the message with “Copyright notice”. Identify the work you own or represent, the exact URL of the material in question and the part of that page that you believe infringes it. A link to an authorised original or another useful reference will help locate the issue.

Include your name, an email address for a reply and a statement that you are the rights holder or authorised to act for one. If you are making a formal notice under the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act, include the contact details required by that law, a physical or electronic signature, a good-faith belief that the disputed use is not authorised by the owner, its agent or the law, and a statement under penalty of perjury that the notice is accurate and you are authorised to act.

What helps an examination

Separate each disputed URL and explain the claimed rights. A broad complaint about a topic, an animal name or a geographical fact may not identify copyright material. Do not include passwords or unrelated personal records.

We may seek clarification, restrict access to disputed material or remove it while a concern is reviewed. Relevant parts of a notice may need to be shared with a contributor or adviser to understand and respond to the claim.

If material was restricted in error

Reply with the page URL, the material affected and the grounds for believing the use is authorised or was misidentified. Where a statutory counter-notification procedure applies, its additional statements and jurisdictional requirements must be satisfied; seek qualified advice if unsure. Restoration is not automatic merely because a disagreement is raised.
